NSBproject is pleased to participate in Polymers-5B: Turning Waste into Sustainable Solutions
Led by IST-ID ASSOCIAÇÃO DO INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TÉCNICO PARA A INVESTIGAÇÃO E O DESENVOLVIMENTO (Lisbon, Portugal), Polymers-5B brings together a consortium of 12 partners from across Europe. The project aims to address the global challenge of plastic pollution by developing bio-based polymers derived from underutilized agri-food and wood waste streams.
“Polymers-5B: Turning food waste & biomass into sustainable bioplastics!” says the project leader. “We are mimicking existing plastics with plant-based materials for a greener future.”
Focus on Circular Bioeconomy
Polymers-5B aligns with the goals of the CBE JU, promoting a shift towards a circular bioeconomy in Europe. The project will focus on:
- Selecting bio-renewable monomers from tomato, olive oil, and wood pulp waste.
- Developing sustainable extraction processes using AI and safe-by-design methodologies.
- Simulating and designing the properties of bio-based polymers for optimal performance.
- Piloting and validating bio-based polymeric prototypes for specific applications.
- Conducting a life-cycle assessment to ensure environmental sustainability.
Expected Impact
Polymers-5B is expected to have a significant impact on the European plastics industry:
- Expanding the availability of bio-based products that meet market demands.
- Creating new applications for bio-based polymers.
- Transforming the plastics sector towards a more sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient future.
- Supporting EU policies and global commitments on bioeconomy and climate change.
